In honor of the publication of our anthology On Being Jewish Now: Reflections from Authors and Advocates (Zibby Books, 10/1/24), we’ve created a platform for everyone, not just the 75 contributors, to publish personal essays about being Jewish today.
Our team at Zibby Media, founded by author, podcaster and bookstore owner Zibby Owens, will curate and edit essays, sending some out in our newsletter and posting others here on Substack.
Submissions Instructions:
In 500 to 1,000 words, please share what it means and how it feels to be Jewish now.
(These were Zibby’s additional guidelines to the anthology contributors that also apply here.)
This is NOT supposed to be a political treatise. It is NOT supposed to be the op-ed column. It is NOT supposed to be threatening or aggressive. It's supposed to be as if you were going to coffee with a close friend you haven't seen in a while, sharing stories about what has happened. It should be a glimpse into tradition and culture and the JOY we all need to help us all get through what has happened. Or it could just be the stress of your son's bar mitzvah. Or the challah you've made and a recipe. Or the shabbat dinners you've hosted. Or a moving time at your kid's school. Or a time you were review-bombed and couldn't believe it and how that made you feel. Not the headline: the feelings behind the headline that only YOU can write.
We’ll publish essays that meet our editorial standards. All profits of On Being Jewish Now go to Artists Against Antisemitism. Everyone involved with the project has done so on a pro bono basis.
